Doves in the Wind

The song Doves in the Wind by SZA is centered heavily around the idea of sexuality and the female body. This song though dedicated to vaginas, is so much deeper than pussy. The overall idea SZA is getting at with this song is that women and their pussies should be glorified, not trivialized. Women are more than their bodies and if they truly respect the man that they are with they will give him more. The very opening lines to the song portray this idea very well.

“Real n****s do not deserve pussy
Meaning its more, you see right through walls
Ain’t talkin’ about pussy
Meaning you deserve the whole box of chocolates”
(SZA, Doves in the Wind)

Sex is only part of a strong relationship. If all the man is getting from the woman is sex, she most likely doesn’t actually care about him. Like SZA is saying, real men do not deserve pussy, they deserve the whole box of chocolates; love, affection, trust and sex.
In addition to SZA’s incredible lyricism, Kendrick Lamar also drops an amazing rap on the track. Kendrick touches on the idea of how pussy has the power and men are slaves to what is between women’s legs. They lose their minds over sex and the physicality of women. They are so weak for the pussy they don’t even realize they act like wimps and that women have all the true power.

“Pussy is calculating
And good pussy is rather dangerous
Pussy can be so facetious, the heavyweight champ
Pussy is so undefeated, let’s amen to that…
How many times she gotta tell you that dick is disposable?”
(Kendrick Lamar, Doves in the Wind)

Following up Kendrick’s rap, SZA comes back in to reemphasize the main point of the song; pussy should never be trivialized. In fact, any man that thinks otherwise can be easily replaced. Not by another man, but by women themselves, with the use of sex toys and masturbation.

“You could never trivialize pussy
But a bum n***a like you would try it (pussy)
I know what you really ‘bout
High key, your dick is weak, buddy
It’s only replaced by a rubber substitute
We ain’t feelin’ you”
(SZA, Doves in the Wind)

These lines emphasize the fact women can do it all on their own. Men are not as great as they believe to be. However, on occasion there are some men who women can “vibe” with. They are the ones who get the whole box of chocolates, the love, the affection and the crack in the headboard.  But, no matter, women still have the control. Just as doves are a symbol of love, peace and purity so is pussy. Pussy is something that should be respected because it’s the glory that all men, and women need in their lives.
Though I love this song and find it extremely empowering I know there are some people who simply do not feel the same. When this song was heard by an older crowd they just did not understand. They referred to it as “the pussy song” and the meaning was entirely lost. However, having frat boys listen to this song was an entirely different experience. Instead of not grasping the concept like the older generation they understood it perfectly, and it made them more uncomfortable than I ever imagined. The fact they were so uncomfortable showed me just how effective the song actually is. So, here’s to SZA. Though she maybe missed out on educating the older generation, my generation certainly did not miss the point and for that I am very thankful. Perhaps future generations and men generally will become more educated on pussy and the power of women.
